Birding Walk

Join Robin Garwood, a Wildlife Biologist, at the Stanley Creek Overlook to learn about some local birds.  Robin will share birding techniques and put that knowledge into action to check out the bird species in the area.  Please bring binoculars and birding books, if possible.  Some spares for sharing will be available.

Robin worked for for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area for 31 years and has also worked for the Forest Service in Colorado and Utah, and for the Idaho Department of Fish and Bureau of Land Management. She served on the Wood River Land Trust Board for several years and is an an avid birdwatcher as well as a beginner butterfly and bee watcher. Her professional expertise includes habitat restoration and recreation effects to wildlife.

The Stanley Creek Overlook is part of the East Central Region Idaho Birding Trail.  It is centered at the confluence of three mountain streams.  This site contains exceptionally high quality riparian-wetland habitat, particularly for neotropical migratory birds.  Common species during the breeding season are Mallard, Green-winged Teal, Great Blue Heron, Spotted Sandpiper,
Wilson’s Snipe, Willow Flycatcher, Mountain Bluebird, Yellow Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat. Less common birds are Virginia Rail, Sora, Rock Wren, and American Dipper.

DIRECTIONS: From Stanley, 5.1 mi W on ID 21; R (N) into turnout overlooking Valley Ck just past Stanley Lake (FR 653) and Stanley Creek (FR 455) junction.
