Mike Medberry Reading

Friday, June 17, 5:30 p.m.
Library Courtyard

Boise writer Mike Medberry will read from his latest book, Living in the Broken West, on Friday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m. It’s a collection of 18 essays about Mike’s experiences in stunning landscapes in 11 western states. “Walking the L.A. River” describes the wanton destruction and remarkable recovery of an urban river. “In the Land of the Midnight Sun” explores the arctic wildlands and wildlife living within the 23 million acres of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. “Dark Side of the Moon” is the author’s tale of having a stroke in the trackless wilderness of Idaho’s Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Mike has published essays, short stories and books, was an Artist in Residence for the City of Boise, and has taught classes on writing the memoir. He has been a lead staff person for The Wilderness Society, Idaho Conservation League, Hells Canyon Preservation Council, and other organizations.

Library Closed Monday

The library will be closed Monday, June 20 in celebration of Juneteenth. Short for “June Nineteenth,” Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed – a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. See history.com/news/what-is-juneteenth for more information.

Summer hours at the library begin on Tuesday, June 21.

Wildflower Walk

A big thank you to Lisa Horton for leading our Wildflower Walk last Sunday! An intrepid group braved the rain and learned a lot, thanks to Lisa’s extensive knowledge. Lisa is a member of the Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society. Check out their native plant videos made in cooperation with Eye on Sun Valley: https://woodriverinps.wixsite.com/wrinps/plant-videos.
Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association (SIHA) naturalists have also posted some local wildflower videos.
