Book Discussion-The Girl Who Fell from the Sky

October 25, 2022 @ 5:30 pm

Let’s Talk About It – Prize Winners

This is the kick off of Let’s Talk About It, a five-book discussion series focused on prize-winning books. The discussions will be held in the Library Community Room, where we’ll enjoy a simple meal of soup, bread, and dessert before starting the discussion at 6:00 (in person and on zoom here). Books are available at the library. The first book to be discussed is The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow. Rachel, the daughter of a Danish mother and a black G.I., becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy after a fateful morning on their Chicago rooftop. Forced to move to a new city, with her strict African American grandmother as her guardian, Rachel is thrust for the first time into a mostly black community, where her light brown skin, blue eyes, and beauty bring a constant stream of attention her way. This searing portrait of a young biracial girl dealing with society’s ideas of race and class is the winner of the Bellwether Prize for best fiction manuscript addressing issues of social justice.  Discussions to follow this winter:

  • November 29 – Less by Sean Greer
  • January 24 – March by Geraldine Brooks
  • February 28 – Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo
  • March 28 – Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

Sponsors for Let’s Talk About It include The Idaho Commission for Libraries, The Idaho Humanities Council, The Institute of Museum and Library Services, and The National Endowment for the Humanities.  For more information on the books, please see Idaho Commission for Libraries website: https://libraries.idaho.gov/ltai/themes-books/
